The Acerbis Catalunya Round 2020, to be held at the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit, will be the world premiere of MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship on the Catalan soil. To celebrate this landmark, Gemocat –the company sponsoring the Round –wanted to create a special trophy that is a homage to the Catalan motorcycling tradition, of which the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit is the heir.
The trophy is made up of ionic columns on some steps. It is a representation of the columns located at the mountain of Montjuïc, which were created by the architect Puig i Cadafalch with the 1929 World Fair in mind and which represent the four stripes of the Catalan flag.
These columns on some steps also bring us memories of the old Montjuïc track. This urban circuit held the great international motorcycling competitions that took place in Catalonia between 1932 and 1986 and is the predecessor of the actual Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit and of all the motorsport culture for several generations of Catalans.
The set sits on a green marble base, the same one that forms part of another icon of Montjuïc: the Mies Van der Rohe pavilion. A symbol of modernity and innovation, a terrain where Barcelona has always tried to be a figurehead.
With this design, Gemocat hopes that this unique trophy will occupy a prominent place inside the winner’s trophy cabinet and, at the same time, remind them of the importance of motorsport in Catalonia and with the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit as one of its maximum exponents.
