The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has once again been ranked as the world’s most sustainable motorsport venue. This is according to the Sustainable Circuits Index™ (SCI™) study, carried out by consultancy firm Enovation Consulting, a B Corporation-certified agency, specialising in sports sustainability, in collaboration with Professor Paolo Taticchi, Professor of Strategy and Sustainability at UCL School of Management and Co-Director of the UCL Centre for Sustainable Business.
The study analyses 115 international circuits, both permanent and temporary, based on their progress in sustainability and their contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The Catalan circuit tops the rankings, ahead of Mugello in second place and Silverstone in third. The study recognises the Circuit’s ongoing commitment to its comprehensive sustainability strategy, which is integrated into the day-to-day management of the facility and the organisation of its major sporting events.
The report highlights the new initiatives launched in the field of biodiversity as one of the most notable actions taken over the past year. The Circuit has reinforced its commitment to sustainable environmental management by introducing new measures in the woodland area of the venue, planting 200 new trees, installing new interpretative signage featuring QR codes and organising biodiversity workshops during Grand Prix events to promote environmental conservation among fans.
In terms of energy, the report notes that the Circuit continues to source its electricity from the 100 per cent renewable grid and is consolidating its commitment to self-consumption thanks to the 2,300-plus photovoltaic panels installed. Additionally, HVO fuel is used in the temporary low-emission generators employed during Grand Prix events, providing a significantly less polluting alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
The report also recognises the Circuit’s social impact, which is generated through the various charitable and inclusion initiatives it hosts throughout the year. These include projects such as Cheers4U, Mou-te, La Marató de 3Cat and the GP Fundació Isidre Esteve, which establish the Circuit’s reputation as a venue committed to society beyond sporting activities.
Furthermore, the Circuit retains its FIA 3-Star Environmental Accreditation, its CSR policy aligned with the SDGs, and the international ISO 14001 and ISO 20121 certifications, which reaffirm its commitment to continuous improvement in environmental management and the sustainable organisation of events.
This commitment to sustainability is one of the key pillars of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya’s strategic plan. Under the 3C management philosophy (Conscience, Commitment and Coherence), the plan integrates social, economic and environmental dimensions to promote responsible activity in line with the company’s mission, ‘Driving for a better future’, within the framework of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
