The Barcelona-Catalunya GP: Antonelli’s next challenge
The Grand Circus arrives in Catalonia for another thrilling weekend. F2, F3 and the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will round off the racing programme.
9 June, 2026 | Formula 1
The FORMULA 1 MSC CRUISES GRAN PREMIO DE BARCELONA-CATALUNYA 2026 is already revving its engines. From 12 to 14 June, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will host the seventh round of the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship season. This is a crucial stage of the championship, with battles still to be decided in both the title race and the midfield.
Formula 1 arrives in Catalonia with Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) as the clear championship leader, having achieved five consecutive victories and opened up a significant lead in the standings. The Italian driver cemented his position with another masterclass in Monaco. However, the World Championship’s visit to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will present a very different challenge for teams and drivers, as it is one of the most comprehensive and demanding circuits on the calendar.
While Antonelli has undoubtedly been the standout figure of the season so far, there are plenty of other points of interest in the championship. Lewis Hamilton is currently second in the World Championship standings in his second season with Ferrari. Meanwhile, George Russell, who was one of Antonelli’s main rivals at the start of the year, arrives in Barcelona after a challenging race in Monaco, which caused him to lose ground in the standings. Just two points separate these two heavyweights.
In the constructors’ championship, Ferrari has established itself as Mercedes’ main challenger at the start of the season. Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have demonstrated remarkable consistency, enabling the Scuderia to remain competitive, although they still lack the consistency required to challenge Antonelli’s dominance. Leclerc, for his part, trails the leading group in fourth place.
McLaren also aims to be one of the protagonists of the weekend. After clinching the drivers’ and constructors’ titles in 2025, the British team is looking to catch up with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. The two drivers have produced mixed results in the first races of the year, alternating between standout performances and below-expectation results. The Woking-based team are in fifth and sixth place respectively.
Meanwhile, Red Bull finds itself in an unusual situation. Max Verstappen has yet to regain the consistency that allowed him to dominate in previous seasons, and he arrives in Catalonia needing a strong result to put him back in contention for the top spots. Meanwhile, young talents such as Isack Hadjar have become rising stars in the championship thanks to their consistently strong performances.
The home crowd will once again have two reasons to cheer on Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz. The driver from Asturias continues to be one of the leading figures on the grid and will look to convert the support from the grandstands into momentum to keep scoring points, which he has not managed to do so far this year. Sainz, for his part, is heading into his home race aiming to put the disappointment of retiring in Monaco behind him, and to regain his confidence in a season that still offers him plenty of opportunities to climb the standings.
More excitement with F2™ and F3™
The 2026 FORMULA 1 MSC CRUISES BARCELONA-CATALUNYA GRAND PRIX sporting programme will feature the FIA Formula 2 and FIA Formula 3 championships, which are entering the Catalan round at a pivotal point in the season.
The F2 championship has got off to a very close start. Gabriele Minì (Campos Racing) is currently top of the leaderboard, with Nikola Tsolov (ART Grand Prix) and Martinius Stenshorne (Hitech TGR) close behind. Local hero Mari Boya, meanwhile, is looking to make his mark on a circuit he knows inside out and bounce back from a difficult start to the championship. Meanwhile, the Campos Racing team arrives at their home race as one of the category’s leading contenders.
FIA Formula 3 will hold special appeal for local fans thanks to Barcelona-born Bruno Del Pino (Van Amersfoort Racing). The Catalan driver is second in the overall standings after securing a commendable podium finish in Monaco. He is eight points behind the leader, Ugo Ugochukwu (Campos Racing), and one point ahead of Britain’s Freddie Slater (Trident), who is also a title contender. Support from the stands could give one of Spanish motorsport’s emerging talents an extra boost.
The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup rounds off the programme
The FORMULA 1 MSC CRUISES GRAN PREMIO DE BARCELONA-CATALUNYA 2026 will also feature the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, one of the world’s leading single-make series. The series will arrive at the Circuit for the second round of the season, following its season opener in Monaco last weekend.
Germany’s Theo Oeverhaus (Martinet by Alméras) arrives in Barcelona as the championship leader, having secured an impressive victory on the streets of the Principality. Andrea Bristot (Dinamic Motorsport) and Gustav Burton (Team Proton Huber Competition) are currently in second and third place respectively, but the standings are still in their early stages. Additionally, the Catalan round will feature a special guest appearance by 1997 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve.
