Russell leads Mercedes’ double strike at the Circuit

Hamilton slips in between the Mercedes cars, putting Ferrari back on the front row on Catalan soil.

13 June, 2026 | Formula 1

The starting grid for the 2026 FORMULA 1 MSC CRUISES BARCELONA-CATALUNYA GRAND PRIX has now been set. George Russell confirmed on Saturday the excellent form shown by Mercedes since the start of the event and secured pole position after leading a qualifying session marked by numerous surprises.

The British driver secured his third pole position of the season to top an outstanding result for the German team. He earned this honour with a time of 1:14.679 on his final flying lap.

Starting alongside him will be Lewis Hamilton, who was the star of the day after securing a place on the front row for his Ferrari SF-26 and returning the Scuderia to the group of favourites. The seven-time world champion delivered his best qualifying result at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya since joining Ferrari, and he will be aiming for his first podium with the Italian team at the Catalan circuit tomorrow. Kimi Antonelli and Lando Norris will make up the second row, whilst Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar will share the third.

Mercedes has thus confirmed the potential it showed on Friday. A year after McLaren monopolised the top two positions on the grid with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, the Brackley-based team has taken the lead in the time sheets thanks to Russell and Antonelli. McLaren, however, remains somewhat out of the running for victory, with one of its drivers, Norris, in the top five and Piastri in seventh place.

The final session also produced one of the day’s most unexpected moments. Charles Leclerc caused a red flag in Q3 after losing control of his Ferrari during one of his flying laps. The incident temporarily halted qualifying and affected the final minutes of the battle for pole. The Monegasque driver was unable to improve his time and will ultimately start from tenth position.

Liam Lawson placed his Racing Bull in eighth place, whilst Nico Hülkenberg was ninth in the Audi, completing a highly competitive midfield in which the gaps were minimal throughout the session.

Of the home drivers, Carlos Sainz failed to make it through Q2 and will start from sixteenth on the grid. The Madrid-born driver will start the race from the midfield, aiming to move up the order in a race expected to be shaped by strategy and the high tyre degradation seen throughout the weekend. It has been a more difficult day for Fernando Alonso. The Asturian driver failed to make it through Q1 and will bring up the rear of the starting grid in twenty-second position. In fact, the Aston Martins were three seconds off the leading times in Q1.

With the grid now set, the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix is gearing up for a race that promises a variety of strategic scenarios, with Mercedes in a strong position, Ferrari lying in wait with Hamilton, and McLaren and Red Bull battling for the midfield positions. Tyre management and high temperatures will once again be key factors in Sunday’s race.

F2: Kush Maini is in a league of his own

Kush Maini’s performance in the F2 Sprint race was in a class of its own. The ART Grand Prix driver made the most of his second-place start on the reverse grid and took control of the race with relative ease.

Nikola Tsolov and Campos Racing were the ones chasing the Indian driver for much of the race, and seemed to have the second step of the podium secured. However, the final four laps brought a dramatic turn of events. Tsolov was seeing the end of his tyres, with Gabriele Minì (MP Motorsport) and Colton Herta (Hitech) snatching his podium chances.

However, Herta made a costly mistake on the final lap, braking too late and ending up in the gravel. Minì then secured second place, whilst Tsolov regained the final podium spot. On a positive note, Herta managed to finish fifth, with Noel León (Campos Racing) also capitalising on the incident to take fourth.

The home rider, Mari Boya (Prema Racing), made a spectacular start that allowed him to climb up the field. The Catalan was unable to set a good time in qualifying yesterday due to a red flag, and today he had to start from the back of the grid. Boya eventually finished 15th.

F3: Wharton secures his second victory

James Wharton claimed his second Formula 3 victory today, his first of the season. The Prema Racing driver took the lead right from the start of the Sprint race, and no rival was able to keep up with him.

The picture was somewhat different behind him, with Fredie Slater (Trident) and Gerard Xie (DAMS Lucas Oil), the driver who started from pole position, battling fiercely for the podium. In the end, Slater took the silver medal, also moving to the top of the points table, level with Ugo Ugochuku.

For his part, Ugochuku had a somewhat less successful race. The previous championship leader went wide whilst attempting to move up to sixth place. His off-track excursion meant the American failed to score any points at the Circuit.

With these two rivals leading the way, Bruno del Pino is hot on their heels in third place. The Catalan put in a very solid performance today, securing a creditable sixth place. Even so, most of the points will be up for grabs tomorrow in the long race, with a starting grid very different from today’s reverse grid.

Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: Masters smashes the clock

The only series not to have held any races today was the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. The one-make series has already finalised its starting grid for tomorrow, with Keagan Masters taking pole position.

The Proton Competition driver clocked a time of 1:42.637, a lap that saw him finish ahead of Paul Cauhaupe and Theo Overhaus, who finished second and third on the day. Tomorrow at 10:10 a.m., the series will award points in the sole race held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

A sustainable event

Under the 3C management philosophy (Conscience, Commitment and Consistency), which integrates social, economic and environmental aspects, the Circuit works to achieve responsible activity in its mission ‘Driving for a better future’, within the framework of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals.

This GP, which is certified to ISO 20121 and ISO 14001 standards, is once again proud to be held at Catalonia’s largest public self-consumption photovoltaic facility. The Catalan racetrack has a total of 2,319 solar panels that generate 50% of the energy consumed.

Other promoted actions are the rental of low-emission generators, the donation of surplus food, the offer of km0 and ecological food, the presence of drinking water sources in the public areas, the improvement of the biodiversity of the green areas, the collaboration with companies with social value, the valorisation and recycling of waste, the promotion of sustainable mobility, the use of the circular economy and many more.
