In the run-up to the FORMULA 1 ARAMCO GRAN PREMIO DE ESPAÑA 2025, Fernando Alonso and Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya have signed an agreement whereby the Asturian driver becomes an ambassador for the track with the aim of promoting the Catalan facility worldwide and helping to train promising young drivers in the world of motor racing.
Fernando Alonso: “It is an honour and a privilege, and I am very happy to be an ambassador for Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which is so special to me and to all Spanish fans, and which has given us so much joy. It is a circuit that is closely linked to my career because it was the first one where I tested a single-seater, when I was still in karting. It is the track where I have definitely driven the most laps in my entire life, from F1 pre-season tests to races and other activities that have taken place there.”
The Circuit is a special track for the Spaniard, where he has achieved significant success, with seven podium finishes and two victories: “I remember 2003 as an unforgettable Spanish Grand Prix, when I finished on the podium and experienced some incredible sensations. It was the first time I saw all the grandstands in blue and such massive support from across the country. It was a turning point at all levels and I remember it with great fondness.”
The Circuit has recently undergone an ambitious transformation to position itself as the most modern track in Europe. “It was necessary for the Circuit to take this step in order to have a solid future and adapt to the current demands and standards of F1 and circuits in other countries. This has brought it up to level ten, with a promising future.”
Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has a contract with Formula 1 until 2026 and its renewal is currently being negotiated. In this regard, the Spanish driver affirms: “In my opinion, it is imperative that Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya remains on the calendar, both for its facilities and for its tradition and roots in competition. There are several types of circuits on the calendar, including urban circuits in large cities and those in the Middle East, which have incredible facilities. But there are also historic circuits with a long tradition in F1, where the history of this sport has been written. All options must be weighed up, but I believe that these circuits must be kept and, above all, that safety on the track must not be underestimated.”
The relationship between Fernando Alonso and Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya goes beyond the international promotion of the track. Promising young drivers will also benefit from the two-time world champion’s extensive experience and knowledge, as well as the first-class facilities at their disposal. “The idea is to help future generations with my more than 20 years of experience in F1 and more than 35 in the world of motorsport, combined with the Circuit’s proven expertise after 35 years of hosting major events. To help young talent, it is important to have premium facilities such as those at the Circuit, which can offer a 360-degree experience all year round. I believe that together we can achieve great things with the young talents.”
Pau Relat, President of Fira de Barcelona and Fira Circuit, the company that manages the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya since 1 January, said: “It is an honour to have Fernando Alonso as ambassador for the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. This is where it all began, where he has achieved great triumphs in his successful career, boosting this country’s love for the sport and bringing excitement to our facilities. It is a real privilege for us to have an F1 world champion like Fernando, who will not only help us promote this circuit as one of the best in the world, but will also contribute his extensive experience in training promising young drivers.”
The FORMULA 1 ARAMCO GRAN PREMIO DE ESPAÑA will take place from 30 May to 1 June at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in a historic year that marks the 75th anniversary of F1 and the 35th consecutive edition of the Formula 1 Grand Prix held at the Catalan track.
