In the middle of the week of the staging of a world championship event, the Hyundai N Catalunya WorldSBK Round of the Superbike World Championship, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is also focusing on many other aspects beyond the sporting ones. This is the case of sustainability management and the multiple actions that the facilities will carry out.

As in the rest of this season’s world championship events (F1®, MotoGP™ and Rallycross), as well as in the 24 Horas de Catalunya Motorcycle Race, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has been audited to obtain the ISO 20121:2013 certification for sustainable events.

Among the sustainable actions to be highlighted is the use of 100% renewable energy. The power used during the days of the event has a completely renewable origin, in order to try to reach a zero carbon footprint.

There will also be electric charging points. Seven different charging points located in different areas will be available for the organisers or those who can access the paddock area. In addition, the use of sustainable generators will be promoted.

The use of 0-kilometre products by all of the catering suppliers will be promoted in order to support local producers and craftsmen, make an ecological consumption, using seasonal and proximity products. The Circuit’s restaurant does also offer this type of Km 0 gastronomy, with healthy food, committed to the surroundings, in order to avoid long transport ways and the respective CO2. emissions.

In addition, uncooked leftover food will be donated, as a large amount of surplus food is generated after three days of the event. The Catalan racetrack will donate this surplus again this year to local social entities. This action has been bearing fruit for many years now, with more than 6,500 kg donated since 2017.

The management of 0 waste is also envisaged, as the best waste is that which is not generated. The Stop Food Waste Campaign will continue to raise awareness and prevent food waste. All catering outlets have posters with this message. Some circular economy actions will be carried out, such as the reuse of tyres and the recovery of the waste generated, or the distribution of reusable cups in the bars of the public areas to finance the Circuit’s Educational Forest project.

Finally, the sustainability stand located behind Grandstand G (open during the weekend from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.). It will disseminate all these sustainable actions that the Circuit is carrying out during the Hyundai N Catalunya WorldSBK Round. It will also show the stamp of the ISO 14001 certification and the Biosphere Commitment certificate.

Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is now celebrating 13 years of being a pioneer in terms of sustainability within the framework of its 30th anniversary, standing out in its trajectory as a leading activity in its sector.
