Imposing victory for Maini in the second GP3 Series race

Nirei Fukuzumi leaves Barcelona on top of the overall standings.

Formula 1

Arjun Maini was crowned winner at the second  GP3 race  at the Circuit de Barcelona–Catalunya. The Indian Jenzer Motorsport driver stamped his authority from start to finish, and racked up his first victory this season.

Dorian Boccolacci (Trident) finished a strong second, and Italian Alessio Lorandi (Jenzer Motorsport) revisited the third step of the podium he had already climbed onto in the first race.

Maini nabbed the lead with a fantastic start, where both him and Boccolacci disposed of Campos Racing pole sitter Raoul Hyman -who finished 8th yesterday-, and managed to hold off the Frenchman’s attempts at getting ahead, and moved on to pull a gap between the two.

In the meanwhile, Boccolacci was busy keeping Anthoine Hubert (ART Grand Prix) at bay. As the frontrunners consolidated their positions, Lorandi was on a charge from 6th in the starting grid to his final third place.

This time, the ART Grand Prix drivers –who dominated the first race- were locked out of the podium: Hubert, Russell and Fukuzumi wound up 4th, 5th and 6th fastest. The fastest man in qualifying, Jack Aitken, did not make it to the points area. He started from the back of the grid after failing to finish the first race, and worked his way up to a final unrewarded 12th place.

After the FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO DE ESPAÑA PIRELLI 2017 opening round, Fukuzumi leads the overall standings with his first race victory and 29 points, clear of Lorandi (25 points) and second race winner Maini (21 points).

The upcoming GP3 series race will be held at the Red Bull Ring on July 7-9, as a support event for the Austrian Formula 1 Grand Prix.
