The FIM MotoGP™ World Championship is back at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Once again, the best riders of the world of motorcycling will be challenging each other on a racetrack that has become an unavoidable stop in their yearly world tour, in one of the tightest and most competitive seasons of recent times.

The event at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, to be staged from 4 to 6 June, will be the seventh round of the year, the fifth on the European continent. After Qatar -with two events-, Portugal, Jerez, France and Italy, the World Championship is now landing in Catalonia. And it does so with a surprising classification in the three classes, leaving no one cold, and with MotoE™ visiting the Circuit for the first time.

Fabio Quartararo may repeat his result at the Circuit

The French rider is running as the strongest rider of the year. Three victories endorse his leading position in the classification. Quartararo is the rider who has won the most races this year, achieving a total of 105 points. Only Jack Miller, with two victories, and Maverick Viñales, with one, have been able to enter this group of winners with the highest amount of points. However, Miller is fourth overall in the championship standings and Viñales sixth. Without doubt, Quartararo is arriving in Barcelona with many options to repeat his 2020 result, highly motivated and with an excellent performance in order to step on the highest place of the podium.

Johan Zarco is the immediate pursuer of Quartararo, providing this season with a French dominance. His 81 points are threatened by the 79 points held by Pecco Bagnaia. Putting the Yamaha machine of the leader aside, the Ducati machines are making strong pressure in a season in which they could be monopolizing the podium until the end of the year. Zarco, Bagnaia and Miller do not seem to be willing to give an option to their rivals of other makes. The reigning World Champion is, however, trying to break this group with his Suzuki. Joan Mir is running fifth, but he knows that he has still a lot of options.

Local rider Aleix Espargaró is overall seventh. The Aprilia rider is becoming one of the usual riders in the fight for the leading spots. Brad Binder, Franco Morbidelli and Miguel Oliveira round-off the top 10 of the premier class of motorcycling.

The start of the season has not been as easy or satisfying for all of the local representatives. Pol Espargaró, for example, is currently on eleventh position of the standings, in his first season with the Repsol Honda team. Alex Rins, is running thirteenth. Despite his great pace, several crashes have left his score box quite affected. The Márquez brothers, Álex and Marc, close the standings as regards the Catalan riders, on fifteenth and seventeenth position respectively. But still, Marc Márquez missed out on the first rounds of the year, and is now running his own mission to recover the pace and confidence after the time he has been away from the circuits due to his injury.

Remy Gardner leads the Moto2 standings

Remy Gardner is giving few opportunities to his rivals, as he is being one of the most regular riders. He started the season with two second positions and he has missed the podium only once this year. He arrives in Barcelona with a recent victory in Italy and 114 points. Raúl Fernández has more victories, two, but less points. The Spaniard has scored 108 points and he will surely try to change positions on Catalan grounds. Marco Bezzecchi follows the couple, although a bit far away, with 88 points.

Sam Lowes is fourth in the standings and chains a somewhat unfortunate streak. Lowes started the season as an unbeatable rider, with two victories in Qatar, but he hasn’t been able to keep the pace. Fabio di Giannantonio closes the Moto2™ top 5. Arón Canet is the second best classified Spaniard.

Rookie Pedro Acosta leads Moto3

Incredible. A word that defines the performance of the Moto3™ rookie Pedro Acosta. Born in Murcia (Spain) and only 17 years old, he leads the class and has clinched four of the six possible victories. Moreover, his results have given him a small but comfortable advantage that would allow him to make some other mistake. Jaume Masià follows him on second position, although with almost half of the points, 59. Only two points behind, there is Ayumu Sasaki and one point behind, Sergio García and Romano Fenati, tied with 56 points.

Equality is so evident in Moto3 that Darryn Binder, Andrea Migno and Niccolo Antonelli are on sixth, seventh and eighth position respectively, with 47 points each. Dennis Foggia and Gabriel Rodrigo close the top ten positions.

Italian dominance in MotoE

After the 2021 rounds staged in Jerez and Le Mans, the standings are under Italian rule. With 41 points, Alessandro Zaccone (Octo Pramac MotoE) is leading the standings, followed by Mattia Casadei (Ongetta SIC58 Squadra Corse), with 33 points. At the age of 22 and 21 years, the Italian riders are showing that age and experience are not at odds with talent.

Dominique Aegerter (Dynavolt Intact GP) is third overall, although tied on points with Casadei. Jordi Torres (Pons Racing 40) is the best positioned Spanish representative on fifth position. María Herrera (Openbank Aspar Team), Miquel Pons (LCR E-Team) and Fermín Aldeguer (Openbank Aspar Team) complete the group of local riders.
