Everything is ready and set at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya to experience one of the most special and important weekends of the year. The magic of the great circus will be back again at a consolidated and much appreciated racetrack by the premier class of car racing, which will be host to this event for the 31st consecutive time in the year of its 30th anniversary.

This milestone could not be celebrated any better than with the comeback of one of the most important national representatives in this sport. Two-times World Champion Fernando Alonso will be racing a home Grand Prix again, an honour that he will be sharing with Carlos Sainz, enlisted in the Scuderia Ferrari. Alonso, however, will make it at the wheel of a single-seater that may sound quite familiar to him, as it is an evolution of the squad that saw him succeed, Renault, now under the name of Alpine.

In addition to the local drivers, this year’s diverse grid is providing for many surprises. The fourth round of the year features an impressive Lewis Hamilton in the lead, claiming for his champion condition, with a total of 69 points. However, Mercedes is far from a double top, as he is closely followed by Max Verstappen with 61 points. The two of them have been the winners of this year’s races, two for Hamilton and one for Verstappen. Behind Mercedes and Red Bull, there is a McLaren machine, something that had not happened for some time. It is Lando Norris, who is strengthening his position within the English team, through brilliant performances, and already 37 points.

Right behind the top 3 there is Valtteri Bottas, who, despite his good results, had a zero in the second race of the season staged in Italy, which pushed him down in the standings. Charles Leclerc follows him, only 4 points behind. The Monaco-born driver is being regular, always within the top five or six positions. The sixth place in the Championship is held by Checo Pérez, who is surely more than happy to be part of the Red Bull Racing Honda team. Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren), Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), Esteban Ocon (Alpine) and Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri) complete the top ten positions of the F1 World Championship. Fernando Alonso is on twelfth position.

In only a few hours, the World Championship will be starting engines again at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. We will have to wait until then to see which teams and which drivers will be standing out on a racetrack they all know perfectly well, as they have been testing there, making more laps than on any other, and which they have visited with other training championships in different categories, as well.

More thrill with the Support Championships

This edition Formula 1® will be accompanied by the best car racing championships, as usual. On the one hand, Formula 3® will have their opening round at the Circuit. The edition promises to be better than ever, as the series is filled with new young talents. Some of them with family names that are more than well-known in the world of motorsports: Leclerc, Doohan or Schumacher, amongst others.

On the other hand, the recently created Formula Regional Europe Championship by Alpine, a merger of former single-seater series that intends to boost the promotion of talented drivers.  And the Spanish national talents will have a lot to say, as there are several local drivers who have registered for this championship. David Vidales, Mari Boya, Lorenzo Fluxà and Belén García complete the national representation at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and expect to have an excellent season start at their second round of the season.

A suitable environment for safe sports

With the experience of last season, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has learned how to adapt to the new environment and the new reality arising out of the pandemic, showing an excellent organizational ability to create a safe environment.

The Circuit that has already established a strict action protocol, is including for this event, the Formula 1 protocol, which details several specific aspects for the different areas in which the Grand Prix is staged. One of them is, for example, the co-existence of working groups, which are isolated in different ‘bubbles’, in order to avoid contact between groups of people performing their tasks in different spaces.

All people having to move around the paddock and nearby areas, undergo an exhaustive control from the performance of PCR tests before and during the event. As an additional guarantee for the access to the Circuit, body temperature controls are made, and constant disinfection is recommended and promoted as well.

Conscience, commitment and coherence with the environment

The FORMULA 1 ARAMCO GRAN PREMIO DE ESPAÑA 2021 is not only engines. The Circuit is also committed to the philosophy of the 3C management for sustainability, integrating the social, economic and environmental components. And this is done with conscience, commitment and coherence, by means of a wide range of actions.

These include the use of 100% renewable energy, food donations, the use of 0km catering products, waste management, sustainable forestry in the surroundings of the Circuit, and the use of circular economy to fund it by means of other sustainable actions, among many others.
