Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has signed agreements with Formula 1® and Dorna Sports, which ensure the continuity of the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Catalan MotoGP™ Grand Prix at the Catalan track until 2026. These agreements have thrived after the Government authorised the signing of both contracts, as announced at the press conference following the Executive Council.

Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix

The new contract, signed between Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and Formula 1®, provides for the staging of the Spanish Grand Prix within the FIA Formula 1® World Championship calendar for a period of 5 years. Moreover, with this agreement, the Circuit strengthens its international soundness and the position as a sportainment benchmark.

Roger Torrent, Catalan Minister of Business and Labour, and Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya President: “We welcome the renewal of this contract, which includes a mutual commitment clause to help us turn Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya into a model and world benchmark of sustainability applied to this type of facilities. We want the circuit to become an exponent of the green transformation and the adaptation of infrastructures to the demands of the climate emergency”.

Stefano Domenicali, Formula 1® President and CEO: “We are delighted to announce this deal with Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. I want to thank to promoter and the authorities for their enthusiasm and commitment to keeping Formula 1 in Barcelona, with improvements that will be made to the track and facilities, and continuing our long history together. The team’s and drivers always look forward to racing at the circuit and visiting Barcelona, and the Spanish fans will continue to see their national heroes, Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz up close”.

Gran Premi de Catalunya de MotoGP™

The agreement signed with Dorna Sports, represented by its CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta, ensures the staging of a minimum of three Grands Prix over five years. In this way, the Gran Premi de Catalunya de MotoGP™ will be held for the 2022 season, while thereafter it could alternate with other circuits on the peninsula until 2026, the last year of the contract, and always maintaining a minimum of three editions in the period from 2022 to 2026.

Roger Torrent, Catalan Minister of Business and Labour, and Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya President: “We are very pleased to continue hosting the most important competition in the world of motorcycling. This is great news for the fans of our country, for the international projection of Barcelona and Catalonia, and for the objective of turning the circuit into a strategic piece for the economic and social development linked to the green mobility industry”.

Carmelo Ezpeleta, Dorna Sports CEO: “The renewal for five more seasons with Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is undoubtedly very good news for the MotoGP™ World Championship. The spectacular Catalan track has been linked to MotoGP since Dorna’s beginnings and has become a regular event on the calendar every season. This important agreement extending the relationship until 2026 proves once again the commitment shown by the promoter to our championship”.
